Football…The best thing! Agreed?

I always write about issues and subjects related to work. Not today.

Today I wanted to write about real life, about something I absolutely love, about something that although many dislike – many do not… football.

I know it’s just a game and that there are more important things to worry about but I don’t care. After a long and often difficult working week it’s nice to spend some (replace with ‘lots’) spare time watching [generally speaking] males running around a green piece of land and trying to put a round bit of leather against some string (a goal for those who can’t keep up).

It makes me feel alive when i go to a live match and sing songs with 75000 other people, when I celebrate and hug strangers as if they are my long lost brother I never knew I had or to share stories with people I’ve never met before but we all feel like we we living the moments together.

As important as watching the games is there are two other important aspects of the game to me:

1. Running my sons U12′s team

2. Other peoples perceptions of it

As the manager of my sons Championship winning team (Played 16, won 14, drew 2, For 153, against 18) I get more pleasure from helping coach 11 year old boys how to play the game than any aspect of my working life. Take me into a boardroom and I’ll kick-ass on my presentation and wow the directors with what I’ve said but the pleasure gained from seeing a kids face, who 3 years ago was quite frankly rubbish, score a goal and run off to share his delight with his parents is priceless.

Even that is surpassed by how amazing it feels when your own son is picked to play academy football from the age of 9 or the way when the team we support scores a last minute goal against our biggest rivals and he turns to me, and as he speaks the 75000 screaming voices go quiet in my head as he says…”dad, I love this game”.

2. I know the well known players get stupid money for not much work but so does Tom Cruise.

I know they act like idiots most of the time and fall out of nightclubs at 2am but what 21 year old hasn’t?

I know they’re not as clever as everyone else, but if you knew you were going to get £80,000 a week would you seriously persue your education or give a shit about elocution lessons? Thought not.

Football may seem puerile and boring to many but I’m afraid you’re wrong. I just won’t have it!

So come on people. Who else loves the “beautiful game”. Just leave yes below in the comments and let’s celebrate. If you don’t then let me know why…
